Bill + Virginia James, Capitol Hill
We were stumped. My wife and I had renovated our house 20 years ago and it was showing its age. However, we didn’t want merely to update and freshen up – we wanted to achieve something we missed in the past: giving our house a new look, so the place truly became our home. An architect told us about Annie Elliott, so we contacted her. It was the best decision we’ve made since buying the house.
We were not disappointed. Annie provided us with a written narrative spelling out the primary objective of her approach, with an outline of how this would be accomplished, including recommended furniture, fabric, and paint options. Apart from being inspirational in style and content, this looseleaf binder was our bible and reference point for the process that followed.
The process was amazing. Annie had an ability to listen and then with our input develop a resolution that incorporated our tastes, but took them to a new level that provided a focus and effect that we alone were unable to achieve. She mixed our antiques with new pieces; she took our walls, which for years had predominantly reflected the off-white palate of our local paint store and gave us colors that were vibrant. She made our house come alive – and we have so benefited and enjoyed the result. Now, it’s fun to live here!
The best part of all this was working with Annie. She was not just an interior decorator or designer, she was our guru, counselor, and partner. She never let us down.
If we hit a snag, I could reach her and rely on her to resolve it. Her ultimate goal was our happiness and making us more at home in our home – in ways we never were able to see on our own.
Annie is tireless and persistent in her efforts. She may be the owner of Bossy Colors, but she’s not bossy. Creative, fun, inspired, sensitive, relentless, wonderful — that’s just a start of what we experienced with Annie – and her talented co-workers. Katherine is superb and Christine keeps communications humming. Simply put, we don’t know what we would have done without Annie and her team.

I have been working with Annie for 6 years. Our projects have included a large colonial home in Chevy Chase, MD and an old farm house (built in the early 1800s) out on the Chesapeake Bay.
She and her team are top-notch.
She has been consistently responsible with project budgets. She has helped us with renovations and the interior design of two homes, and she routinely presents options at different price points. In addition to presenting gorgeous, inspired designs, and helping me create homes that my family loves, she and her team are extremely professional and detail-oriented. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Having made the move from a small condo in the city to a much-larger house in the suburbs, I was overwhelmed by empty rooms. Practically paralyzed, I contacted Annie. As soon as we began talking, I went from being overwhelmed by the task before me to being excited about my design project.
Annie offered the perfect balance of listening to what I hoped for, asking important questions about how I imagined my family would live in the space, and then providing specific direction and suggestions based on her incredible taste, experience, and design skill.
With her good-natured prodding, she encouraged me to consider options that I might otherwise have dismissed. The result: a home that I am thrilled to live in.
Any design project is an investment – financial, emotional, and of one’s time. Annie is sensitive to that investment on all fronts. An admirable combination of proactive and responsive to the client, I felt confident that I was in good hands. With her enthusiasm, sense of humor, and genuine desire to create something wonderful, Annie was truly delightful to work with. I will be calling on Annie again soon and I recommend her unequivocally!

From start to finish, our experience with Annie Elliott and her gifted team at bossy color far exceeded our expectations. Annie has the unique and impressive ability to translate conceptual, abstract ideas into beautiful, nuanced solutions. She transformed our initial set of broad ideas into a robust design plan that captured our over arching vision for the house perfectly.
Annie listens, she is responsive and decisive, and her passion and enthusiasm for her work is contagious. Her raw talent and commitment to quality is unmatched. Treat yourself to the pleasure of working with Annie and her team at bossy on your next home design endeavor, small or large. You will be very pleased!

Annie was a joy to work with. She helped us think through every aspect of the design of a newly remodeled house — two, actually! We used her for both of our remodels and would recommend her to anyone. Our second remodel was particularly challenging because we completely modernized the house.
Annie worked with the architect, contractor, and us to make sure all the details were right and took our tastes and budget into consideration. She is a delight.
Melissa Schwartz + David Muenzer, Kalorama, DC
We have worked with Annie Elliott on a number of projects over the past 6 years, including: (1) an extensive reconfiguration and renovation of the lower level of our house into a playroom, kitchen, guest bedroom and bathroom, gym, and storage area, (2) renovation of our home office, (3) renovation of our master bath, (4) renovation of our entry way (including custom built wall of closets and retiling a vestibule, using the historic 100-year old tiles to the extent possible) as well as (5) furniture purchases and paint colors for a child’s bedroom, master bedroom, and living room.
Annie listened carefully to what we were looking for, in terms of style, design and color, and price. She also was respectful and responsive to how we wished the process to be (e.g., for her to narrow down the options and offer only a few choices rather than a large myriad of options).
We often found exactly what we were looking for from her first selections. But those times when we rejected her proposals, she moved on with a smile and offered other options. We have been thrilled with results!
In terms of timing, we found that Annie met realistic timetables. Renovations and furniture purchases are not quick processes, and these projects were no different than any others we have undertaken in the past, meaning that they take a good deal of time and energy. We would wholeheartedly recommend Annie Elliott!

Annie transformed my house with color and flair that that made my home truly “me.” She asked lots of questions and made suggestions and was never judgmental. Her pleasing personality and terrific can-do attitude made my home transformation so much fun, and she taught me so much about what I didn’t know! I recommend her without any reservation.
Most importantly, Annie was sensitive to my needs, preferences, and lifestyle. She began by studying the pieces of furniture and art I wanted to keep and asking questions about functionality. I looked forward to her visits and was ecstatic with our choices. She definitely made me feel as though I was an integral part of all final decisions. If one is looking for a designer with talent, experience, and the ability to work WITH a client, not FOR a client, Annie Elliott is the home designer for you.
